It lies in the Vega Baja del Segura district, with no coastline of its own, about 39 km (40 minutes) from the city of Alicante, about 31 km (30 minutes) from Alicante-Elche airport and about 58 km (46 minutes) from Murcia. The municipality has 9,433 registered residents (INE, 2024), with the La Marina-El Oasis development, 5.5 km from the town centre, as its largest residential area.

Detached and semi-detached houses predominate in La Marina-El Oasis, many of them resale, compared to the traditional housing of the town centre. It is one of the district's municipalities with the highest proportion of foreign residents, mostly British and German, both as permanent and second homes. Day-to-day amenities include two health centres (San Fulgencio and Urb. La Marina), schools and shops, with the reference hospital in Torrevieja, about 30 km away.
