La Manga is a sand bar 21 kilometres long and between 100 and 1,200 metres wide, separating the Mar Menor from the Mediterranean, running from Cabo de Palos to the San Pedro del Pinatar salt flats. Administratively it is shared between two municipalities: the southern stretch belongs to Cartagena and the rest, from kilometre 3.5 on, to San Javier. A single road, the RM-12, runs from end to end, which is why everything here is located by its kilometre on the Gran Vía.

What makes it unusual is having sea on both sides: the Mar Menor, a warm, shallow salt lagoon, ideal for swimming with children and for sailing; and the open Mediterranean, with more swell. Housing is almost all front-line apartment blocks, many built in the seventies and eighties and used as holiday homes, alongside newer developments. The reference hospital is the Hospital General Universitario Los Arcos del Mar Menor, in San Javier, and the nearest airport is Región de Murcia (Corvera), under an hour away by car; Cartagena is around 40 km away and the city of Murcia a little under 80 km, depending on where in La Manga you are.
