Polop lies inland in the Marina Baixa, Alicante province, north of Benidorm and built on the hill of its castle. It is about 46 minutes by car from the city of Alicante (54 km) and some 47 minutes from Alicante-Elche airport (65 km). It had 5,650 inhabitants according to the INE on 1 January 2024. The municipality borders Monte Ponoig, at 1,181 metres, and keeps a castle of Muslim origin built in the early 12th century, taken by the troops of James I and now recently restored as a heritage site open to visitors.
Housing is mostly villas and chalets on hillsides with views, alongside some apartments in the village centre, in both new build and resale. Around a third of Polop's population is foreign, mostly of European origin, with a strong second-home profile alongside residents who live here year-round. It has a health centre, a state school (CEIP Sant Roc) and local shops, with Benidorm and its beach a few minutes away by road.
