Benijófar is inland in Alicante province, in the Vega Baja del Segura, on the banks of that river. It is a small municipality, barely 4.4 km², with 3,471 inhabitants according to the INE in 2024. It is about 41 minutes by car from the city of Alicante (56 km), 30 minutes from Alicante-Elche airport (48 km) and about 42 minutes from Murcia (58 km). Its old town keeps corners such as the 17th-century waterwheel, the church of Santiago Apóstol and the El Secano park.
Being inland, there is no beach here: life revolves around the village and its huerta, at an unhurried pace all year round. It has a medical centre, a state school (CEIP San Jaime), a nursery, a pharmacy and a supermarket, enough for day-to-day life without leaving the municipality. Benijófar has a sizeable community of European residents who have made it their first or second home, drawn by the quiet and by being close to both the coast and the airport.
