La Mata, a coastal village north of Torrevieja, with the longest beach in the municipality and a character of its own.

La Mata is a village within Torrevieja with an identity of its own: it has its own square, its own church and its own district council office, though it comes under Torrevieja town hall. It sits at the north of the municipality, beside the Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja nature reserve and the Molino del Agua municipal nature site. Its beach runs over two kilometres — the longest in the municipality — with protected dunes where species close to disappearing have recovered, and the 16th-century Embarcadero Tower, a listed monument, at one end.
Low-rise villas and bungalows dominate, alongside newer apartments near the shore. It keeps a village feel, with a weekly market and its own shops, and barely any high-rise building. It draws year-round residents as much as anyone after a quiet second home by the sea.
