Calpe's old town is the walled heart of the village, fortified on the orders of Carlos I around 1530 against pirate raids. Parts of those walls survive, along with the Torreó de la Peça, the old artillery tower, now home to the Museo del Coleccionismo. Set into the wall is the Forat de la Mar, the breach through which fishing skippers would come down at dawn to judge the state of the sea before setting out.
Its streets are narrow and stepped — Puchalt, Mayor, del Campanar, de los Pescadores — opening onto squares such as the plaça de la Vila, with flower-covered façades, painted staircases and murals everywhere. Here stands the church of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves, from 1977, with the Iglesia Antigua attached to it: 15th-century Gothic-Mudéjar, one of the few of its kind in the region, now serving as the chapel of the newer church. The housing is traditional village stock of one to three storeys, in an area of local shops with life all year round.
