The centre of Guardamar runs between the mouth of the river Segura and the beach, with the Plaza de la Constitución as its landmark. Above the town, on a hill 68 metres up, stands the castle, looking out over the Mediterranean, the mouth of the Segura and the whole Vega Baja. Between the town and the sand lie the Alfonso XIII and Reina Sofía parks: 800 hectares of pine forest planted from 1900 to halt dunes that were advancing eight metres a year and threatening to bury the town.

Mid-rise apartment blocks dominate, as in any established town centre, with shops, terraces and life all year round. It is the part of the municipality with most services within walking distance, on top of the holiday use of those who spend only a few weeks a year here.
