The old centre of San Juan de Alicante sits on the flat, some forty metres above sea level and less than two kilometres from the beach that bears its name — which belongs to Alicante, not to this municipality. Its origins lie in the irrigation channels of the Alicante huerta, and that is where its layout comes from: Plaza Maisonnave was the social and economic heart of the town from the 17th century, with Calle Mayor, Plaza de la Cruz and the San Antonio and del Mar streets running off it. The 17th-century church of San Juan Bautista is recognisable by the blue-tiled domes over its chapels.

Traditional houses of one to three storeys predominate — the huerta farmhouse with its balcony and ceramic panels — alongside more recent apartment buildings. On Calle San Antonio and Calle del Mar the ground floors have been restored and painted in bright colours. It is an area of everyday shops and restaurants, with neighbourhood life all year round rather than only in season.
